Using antique brass and silver vessels for florals and plants is a great way to ground your table look. These pieces look great weather you fill them with delicate greens and flowers or hardy succulents and moss.

WHITE TAPERS

For this month’s Vecco rug design, I got into the holiday spirit. I love the new limited edition Ed Roth stencils, and I wanted to use the Huntley Stagsworth Kit somehow. When my daughter saw the deer head stencil, she said: “It’s one of Santa’s reindeer!” which of course gave me the idea of doing a holiday-inspired rug. Initially, I intended on adding snow and stenciling the “reindeer” around the rug (which happens to be the perfect shade of Key Lime green) but, again, my daughter intervened and stated that I must have eight reindeer on the rug and can’t leave out Rudolph. There is something about a nose on a deer that instantly reads “reindeer”, so simply with a dot for a nose (with one shining red), I created Santa’s Reindeer rug. Happy Holidays!
For this rug design you will need:
- Ed Roth stencil kit
- Flint Stone
- Merlot and Pink Fizz (for a bright shade of red)
- Blank stencil
- Sealant
Steps:

1. To plan out the placement of the deer heads, I traced nine heads onto scrap paper and cut them out. For me, it’s easier to accurately plan a design this way, especially when the stencils need to be aligned.

2. To make the snow stencil, I cut random-sized circles into a blank stencil. I then sprayed Flint Stone onto the stencil in light strokes to make a faded effect.
3. For the deer, I used the one stencil in the kit, although it is recommended that a stencil be used only 6 times. I did find that if I really soaked up the leftover paint on the stencil I could make it last a bit longer. I also used one of the cut circles from the snow stencil as a nose.

4. For the nose on the middle deer (Rudolph!), I waited a day for the rug to dry a bit and then covered the whole rug except the little nose. I used a combination of Merlot and Pink Fizz for a bright red color and voila! Santa’s Reindeer!

As usual, we teamed up with Rachel Craven to make the linens for our holiday shoot. Inspired by the winter forest, we dressed the table with a centerpiece overflowing with cedar, pine, bay leaf, amaryllis, and paper whites. Amy Jo Diaz of Piece of Work LA made our place cards. We love how simple and beautiful her calligraphy work is. With the candles lit, wine poured and a little help from our friends, we captured a very special holiday look. We couldn’t be happier with the pictures.
